Abstract: Quality assurance is an important feature of manufacturing systems, and spans the whole product lifecycle. Traditionally, quality assessment in many production processes typically relied on manual inspections due to a lack of reference data and an effective method to classify defects in a systematic way. However, with advances in sensing technologies, the catalyst of the 4th industrial revolution, a real-time automated approach for product quality assessment has become an important aspect of smart manufacturing applications. In this talk, I will introduce various challenges and solutions in quality assurance in manufacturing systems. I will later zoom into quality control in additive manufacturing, where printed part quality has been the major limitation in many applications of 3D printing. I will conclude with a discussion on a number of applications of 3D printing on the continent.
Bio: Moise Busogi received his bachelor’s degree in Industrial and System Engineering, with a minor in Management Science, in 2011 from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Republic of Korea. He received his Ph.D. in System Design and Control Engineering at Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), the Republic of Korea in 2017. He has worked on several problems in the automotive industry, including building automated quality control systems for various manufacturing processes. He also worked with General Motors (GM) to address the increasing complexity of mixed-model assembly lines while maintaining the flexibility of the assembly line. He later joined the Center for 3D Advanced Additive Manufacturing, Republic of Korea, where he used machine learning to detect and minimize part deformation during the printing process. Since 2019, he has been a faculty member at CMU-Africa, where he has been teaching and doing research in the ML domain. He is currently serving as guest editor for a Special Issue of the SAIEE Africa Research Journal and is also a member of IEEE. In the last couple of years, he has been serving as a member of the Technical Committee of “RWANDA FAIR FORWARD PROJECT — Artificial Intelligence for All” which aimed to strengthen local technical know-how on AI. In addition, he also served in Smart Africa Artificial Intelligence (AI) working group to coordinate activities on the development of an Artificial Intelligence blueprint for Africa.
