As the sun dawned on another promising year, Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa) eagerly received the 12th cohort of aspiring graduate students. The atmosphere was electric with excitement as these bright minds embarked on a life-changing journey of graduate education and self-discovery.
For ten weeks leading up to orientation, the recruitment and admissions team engaged in online information sessions with incoming students during pre-orientation Tartan Tuesdays. This gave the students a unique opportunity to connect with the university and their peers before setting foot on campus.
Orientation began with a week-long onboarding process that provided a glimpse into the various functions at CMU-Africa. Throughout August, new students will participate in the New Student Foundation Program to prepare for the official start of their first-year computer engineering courses.
"It's always a hectic time, but the energy and enthusiasm that each new cohort brings carries me through,” said Lucy Anna Kelly, the student success co-curricular manager. “Witnessing the responsibility and commitment these students feel toward their life-changing journey is humbling. I am eager to see them begin to shine in their own unique ways, knowing that each one will shape the future of our university."
Stephen Tipa Augustine from Uganda shared his appreciation for CMU-Africa's "Learner-Centered" mode of teaching, contrasting it with the "Top-Down" approach he encountered during his undergraduate studies. The American-style teaching empowers students to actively participate and think independently, encouraging in-depth exploration of subjects for a holistic understanding. Stephen believes this approach will nurture not only his professional growth but also his critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Gabriel Nishimwe from Rwanda described his journey to CMU-Africa as a determined pursuit. Although initially unable to join due to limited master's programs, Gabriel's resilience paid off when he received an acceptance email, along with the prestigious Government of Rwanda scholarship. Overwhelmed with purpose and determination, Gabriel envisions himself as a tech leader driving positive change in Rwanda.
Dianne Mugunga exuded enthusiasm for the orientation program, emphasizing the warmth and positive energy she felt from the faculty, staff, and fellow students. The informative sessions provided insights into available resources, campus life, and academic programs. Making new friends came effortlessly, and Dianne looks forward to exploring, learning, and growing throughout her college years.
With their eyes set on the horizon of endless opportunities, the Class of 2025 at CMU-Africa stands ready to become Africa's future transformational leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs. As they embrace their unique journeys, CMU-Africa continues to foster an environment of excellence, preparing them to make a lasting impact on their communities and beyond. The future shines bright for these Tartans. Africa and the world await their remarkable contributions.
