Strengthening diaspora connections through talent, industry, and research

CMU-Africa connects with the U.S. Rwandan Ambassador, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and NASA.

On a recent trip to the United States, Carnegie Mellon University Africa Director Conrad Tucker and Director of External Relations Rosine Urujeni spearheaded efforts to strengthen diaspora ties. Their visit included meetings with the Rwandan Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Prof Mathilde Mukantabana, to discuss fostering connections with Rwandan students and faculty members living abroad. Areas of interest include artificial intelligence, space research and policy, and deep tech education.

"As we seek to provide deep fundamental education, we are looking to attract faculty talent to the continent to advance the CMU-Africa mission," Tucker said. "We have that talent in the diaspora, and we are exploring all means to ensure they are aware of the opportunities available at CMU-Africa."

    The delegation also engaged with Kendra Gaither, president of the U.S.-Africa Business Center at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, to explore initiatives aimed at strengthening industry ties. Discussions focused on creating exposure for CMU-Africa’s graduates through the "Pathways to Opportunities" pillar, which equips them for global impact. Gaither will be in Kigali this week with a delegation of U.S. industry leaders to participate in the Global AI Summit and engage with the CMU-Africa community.

    "To achieve global impact, we are intentionally expanding industry partnerships to elevate career and research opportunities for our graduates," Tucker explained.

    The trip concluded with a follow-up meeting with a visit to NASA headquarters building on last summer’s engagement. The engagement centered on expanding collaboration to connect African talent with the global landscape.
