Adjunct Instructor, CMU-Africa
Charlie Wiecha received his M.S. in electrical and computer engineering and his Ph.D. in engineering and public policy at CMU, and focused on human computer interaction in modeling tools for policy analysis. After a year as assistant research professor at CMU, Wiecha joined IBM Research to continue work around languages and tools for UI design. He led IBM’s in-market deployment of its prototype UI platform as the basis for the IBM “guest services system” at the Universal Expo in 1992. At the time, it was the largest local area network deployment in Europe, combining services for messaging, restaurant reservations, news, and pavilion content. More recently, Wiecha led the world-wide development team for IBM’s virtual agent (Watson Assistant) service, and contributed to the Watson OpenScale service focused on evaluating and tracking bias and explanation for ML/AI solutions.
